What time should you meet someone in Buenos Aires?

If you’re going to catch a plane together, it’s best to be early, because planes can run on time. I say ‘can’ because thanks to Latin American strikes, baggage issues, weather and who knows what else, I’ve gotten to know airports in outer Buenos Aires, inner Buenos Aires, Santiago, Lima and Iguazu much better than I’d ever expected!

But if you’re meeting a local for coffee at 3pm, do you turn up at 3? Or 3.10? 3.20? Later? I’ve never really worked it out.

I suggest meeting at the cafe in the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop.

If you have to wait, you can read a book, have a bite to eat and admire the surroundings. You might even get a live pianist.
