In 2011, my friend Joanna and I took the Prospector train to the gold mining city of Kalgoorlie, and drove a hire car 174 kilometres north to the sculptures at Lake Ballard.
We didn’t stay as long as we wanted. A thunderstorm was approaching, and being in an open space with metal objects didn’t seem like the greatest of ideas.
We were going to stay in Menzies, but after seeing the accommodation and meeting some of the other guests, we drove back to Kal in the thunderstorm. Where I had the most tender Thai beef salad that ever existed.
